Barnet Police are asking residents and visitors to be alert during these times of increased security but perhaps just as importantly to think about their own actions and property.

Since July 7th 2005 there have been some 180 calls to “suspect” bags or boxes and while police applaud the vigilance of residents, many of these calls were unnecessary but made because someone else had been thoughtless or careless with their own property.

Don’t leave your bags, suitcases, backpacks or any other personal property unattended. Not only is this inviting a theft, but causing alarm amongst others. Throw away old bags and suitcases responsibly; don’t just leave them in the street. The more responsibility people take for their own property, the more police can focus on other vital work.

Acting Superintendent Lucy D’Orsi, Officer in charge of Operations on Barnet Borough said, “ I welcome the fact that people are talking to us and being the eyes and ears of the service. We don’t however want to deploy resources unnecessarily so we do ask people to look after their own belongings carefully. I have to balance the need to ensure our everyday police work gets done with the need to ensure the safety of Barnet and London as a whole.”
