Watch where you put your wheelie bin! Print E-mail
Following a spate of burglaries where the burglars have made use of wheelie bins to gain access, Barnet Police are warning people to be careful where they keep the bins.

Over the last 12 weeks there have been 3 residential burglaries where suspects have used wheelie bins to climb over side gates or onto side extension/garage to access the rear of the property or 1st floor windows. This figure could be boosted to 16 - 3% of all resident burglaries across the borough over the same time period - where the burglar has obviously climbed (and where there are no other obvious aides to affect the climb) but the wheelie bin is not specifically mentioned in the crime report. Historically, it is the Hendon area that has been affected by this method of entry.

Residents are advised (where possible) to keep wheelie bins behind side gates until the day of collection. If there is a side garden gate, keep the wheelie bin on the side where it can’t be used by anyone trying to climb over. Similarly, don’t leave the wheelie bin near to or giving easy access to a flat roof.

Although wheelie bins are easily moved, if homeowners just gave some thought o where it is kept they may prevent them being used to commit crime.
