As British Summer Times comes to an end police are giving the following advice to householders and residents regarding the forthcoming darker nights.
Lights on in ground floor rooms with windows where curtains or blinds are open, offer opportunities for burglars to see exactly what is available in your home. When you go out, always lock doors and close windows and consider the use of timers for lights and radios if you need to be away from home overnight. They will create the impression that someone is in. Fit good lighting at the front of the house and fit a spy hole allowing you to see who is at the door. Having a door chain means that you can open the door a little way to talk to callers without letting them into your house. Secure garden sheds, which may not be used as frequently now. Make sure that any items in there are also secured if they could assist to break into your home or are in any way valuable. If you go out for the evening, try to make it look as though there is someone still inside the house using lights and radios. Don’t leave just the entrance hall or landing light on! Who sits in there with the rest of the house in darkness? Think when you leave lights on accordingly. This is especially important when leaving the house to collect children from school in the late afternoons. |
