Starting on November 21st 2005 Barnet Police will be targeting knife crime in an operation running across London. The aim is to remove as many knives from the streets and other places. The emphasis is on the deterrence and prevention of crimes rather than detection, although where detected, prosecution will follow.
Barnet Police are working with a variety of other agencies to get this message across. Barnet Action for Youth is taking a theatre group to the schools on the borough with a presentation involving this subject - ten schools have seen the presentation so far. Schools officers now include a discussion of the dangers of knives in all their presentations and so far have involved in excess of 1,000 pupils Leaflets have been distributed to schools and youth clubs on the dangers of knives We are in liaison with London Borough of Barnet Trading Standards with regards to a test purchasing initiative similar to the operations we have undertaken in the past with underage selling of alcohol. There will also be a positive charging policy, this means that anyone arrested and found to be in possession of a knife will be charged with that offence as well as the original offence for which they were arrested. Insp Jo McGlone, running the operation for Barnet Police said, “Barnet will have a zero-tolerance attitude when it comes to possession of knives.” |
