Unfortunately when you have been a victim of car crime its natural for you to want to tidy up and remove all reminders of the crime from sight. However in doing this you can destroy vital clues that can help the police to track down and catch the perpetrators of the crime. Just like in the hit TV show CSI, your local police have some of the finest forensics experts in the world, who can gather vital clues that can stop a criminal from committing the same crime again.
Listed below are some helpful guidelines to help conserve the clues that can provide evidence for successfully detection and conviction
DO
DON'T
ON DISCOVERING THE CRIME
DO Call the Police, who will instruct you what to do DON''T tidy, clean or repair anything which may have been touched by the suspect
IF THEY HAVE SMASHED THE WINDOW
DO Ensure that the broken window is covered by a plastic / other non porous item. Thus protecting the area from the weather. Make sure that any adhesive items used is not placed on the immediate area where fingerprints are likely

DON'T Touch the broken glass or the immediate area around the window.

DON'T Clean up the broken glass that is inside the vehicle.

IF THE HAVE DAMAGED THE DOOR TO ENTER THE VEHICLE
DO Ensure that the door is covered by a plastic / other non porous item. Thus protecting the area from the weather. DON'T Touch the door or the immediate area around it
DO Make sure that any adhesive item used is not placed on the immediate areaDON'T Repair the door or try to bend it back into shape.

DO Check the roof and areas either side of the damaged door for marks etc. If any found preserve as above

 

IF THEY HAVE ENTERED THE VEHICLE BY DAMAGING DOOR LOCKS
DO Ensure that the door is covered by a plastic / other non porous item. Thus protecting the area from the weather. DON'T Touch the door or the immediate area around it

DO Make sure that any adhesive item used is not placed on the immediate area

 
DO Check the areas either side of the damaged door lock for marks etc. If any found preserve as above DON'T Repair the door lock.
THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE

DO Preserve any items that may have been touched, for example

  • Briefcase contents
  • Glove compartment contents
  • Handbag contents
  • Boot of the vehicle contents
DON'T touch any flat shiny surfaces,for example
  • CD Cases
  • Interior Rear View Mirrors
  • Sunglass Lenses
  • L.C.D. of Radios / Sat Nav’s etc
  • Window interiors
JUST REMEMBER IF ITS FLAT AND SHINY then do not touch it
